Some movie studios, including Disney, 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate, have started to provide a high-quality digital-video file of a film in the same package as the traditional DVD.

This extra version, often on a separate disc, is meant to be copied to a Windows PC or Macintosh and viewed with Windows Media Player or iTunes.

Once the digital copy is on the computer, the movie can also be transferred to an iPod or a compatible Windows Media-based portable player. (This provides a legal alternative for getting movies on portable players without the use of third-party software to convert the video file directly from a DVD.)

To transfer the digital copy to the computer, insert the disc with the digital copy into the DVD drive. The DVD package should have also included an insert with anactivation code needed to unlock the digital copy over the Internet, so have that handy and make sure you're online.
